You’re infected with Coronavirus. What now?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by the Coronavirus i\s an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Most people who fall sick with COVID-19 will experience mild to moderate symptoms and recover without special treatment.

How it spreads
The virus that causes COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through droplets. Those droplets are generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or exhales. These droplets are too heavy to hang in the air, and quickly fall on floors or surfaces. You can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are within close proximity of someone who has COVID-19. Or by touching a contaminated surface and then your eyes, nose or mouth.

What should I do in the case of a coronavirus outbreak?
Get the facts from reliable sources to help you accurately determine your risks so that you can take reasonable precautions. Seek guidance from WHO, your healthcare provider, your national public health authority or your employer for accurate information on COVID-19. Also whether COVID-19 is circulating where you live. It is important to be informed of the situation and take appropriate measures to protect yourself and your family.

You need to take the risk of infection seriously. Follow the advice of WHO and guidance issued by national and local health authorities. For most people, COVID-19 infection will cause mild illness however, it can make some people very ill and, in some people, it can be fatal. Older people, and those with pre-existing medical conditions (such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease or diabetes) are at risk for severe disease.

Can coronavirus disease be transmitted through food packages?

According to the currently available information, no coronavirus transmission has been reported by food packages or food itself. With other words, NO.

However, it is important to always follow hygiene rules, when dealing with food or preparing a meal: frequent washing of hands and surfaces, separating between raw meat and other foods, full cooking and immediate cooling down of the food.

Is there any treatment for the coronavirus disease?

NO. Patients in critical condition are being treated in experimental treatments that have yet to be conclusively proven. Treatment is mostly palliative and administered based on the patient's clinical condition. Antibiotics cannot help patients suffering from novel coronavirus disease.

Is the coronavirus disease more severe than the flu?

COVID-19 causes more severe disease than seasonal influenza.
While many people globally have built up immunity to seasonal flu strains, COVID-19 is a new virus to which no one has immunity. That means more people are susceptible to infection, and some will suffer severe disease. Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.
But all death are specifically those with active and fatal diseases (such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer) with a low immunity system. No exceptions.

Is there a vaccine, drug or treatment for COVID-19?

While some western, traditional or home remedies may provide comfort and alleviate symptoms of mild COVID-19, there are no medicines that have been shown to prevent or cure the disease.
WHO does not recommend self-medication with any medicines, including antibiotics, as a prevention or cure for COVID-19. However, there are several ongoing clinical trials of both western and traditional medicines. WHO is coordinating efforts to develop vaccines and medicines to prevent and treat COVID-19 and will continue to provide updated information as soon as research results become available.

Does consuming alcohol kill Covid-19?

Consuming alcohol will not destroy the virus, and its consumption is likely to increase the health risks if a person becomes infected with the virus. Alcohol (at a concentration of at least 60% by volume) works as a disinfectant on your skin, but it has no such effect within your system when ingested.

What is the recovery time for the coronavirus disease?

Using available preliminary data, the median time from onset to clinical recovery for mild cases is approximately 2 weeks and is 3-6 weeks for patients with severe or critical disease.
Recovery for light cases is approximately 2-5 days.

Can you get the coronavirus disease from touching contaminated surfaces?

When someone who has COVID-19 coughs or exhales they release droplets of infected fluid. Most of these droplets fall on nearby surfaces and objects - such as desks, tables or telephones. People could catch COVID-19 by touching contaminated surfaces or objects – and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.

Can anyone be immune to coronavirus disease?

While many people globally have built up immunity to seasonal flu strains, COVID-19 is a new virus to which no one has immunity.
  • That means more people are susceptible to infection, and some will suffer severe disease.
  • That also means that after people are recovered from COVID-19, they are immune.
